Become a licensed public school teacher!
Do you have a 4-year degree and a minimum of 5 years of work experience? If so, Virginia’s Community Colleges invite you to "bring your passion to the future" and become a licensed Virginia public school teacher by enrolling in our 18-week Career Switcher Program.
Two 18-week programs are offered each year. They include 6 Saturday sessions, a 40-hour field placement and 5 online courses. A 1-year provisional teaching license is granted at the end of the 18 weeks, and will be converted to a full 5-year renewable license after 1 year of successful teaching.
The Saturday sessions are taught by distance learning on TCC’s Virginia Beach Campus in the Advanced Technology Center (ATC). (View map and driving directions)
The VCCS’s Career Switcher Alternative Route to Licensure Program trains participants to teach in critical shortage areas such as mathematics, English, foreign languages, sciences, and English for Students of Other Languages (ESOL).
Interested students must apply and successfully complete the Virginia Communication and Literacy Assessment (VCLA) and Praxis Subject Assessment exam at prescribed levels.
Tuition is $3,900. This program is eligible for the Workforce Credential Grant, which may reduce your cost to as little as $1,300.
